Welcome to Grunge Cantina, St. Thomas, Ontario’s own powerhouse tribute to the raw energy and unrelenting spirit of grunge and alternative rock. Born out of a shared passion for the music that defined the '90s, we’re a band that lives and breathes the gritty, rebellious soul of grunge — and we’re here to bring it to life in every performance.
Who We Are
Grunge Cantina is more than just a cover band; we’re a group of musicians with a shared love for the raw, unapologetic sound of the grunge era — a time when music was personal, real, and often noisy. Together, we’ve formed a band that pays homage to the icons of alternative rock, from Nirvana to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam to Alice In Chains, and everything in between. Whether it’s screaming your frustrations out to a powerful anthem or getting lost in the distorted chaos of a great riff, we want our shows to be a visceral, cathartic experience.
Our members hail from St. Thomas, Ontario, and while we all come from different musical backgrounds, our collective love for the gritty sounds of the 90s unites us. We put our own spin on some of the greatest grunge and alternative tracks of all time, blending faithful renditions with our own energy and interpretation to give you an experience that’s both nostalgic and fresh.
What We Do
Grunge Cantina isn’t just about playing the hits. We dive deep into the grunge and alternative catalog, pulling out the forgotten gems alongside the radio staples. Our setlist spans from the early days of the genre to its later years, covering everything from the iconic sound of Seattle’s big four to lesser-known but equally impactful bands like Temple of the Dog, Screaming Trees, and Silverchair.
Our goal is simple: to create a concert experience that feels both intimate and explosive. From the moment the lights dim, our fans know they’re in for a high-energy, emotionally charged set, where the music takes center stage. We strive for authenticity, not just in recreating the songs but in capturing the essence of the grunge era — an era where music was raw, untamed, and unapologetically honest. We want our audience to leave our shows with the same sense of exhilaration and release that grunge gave millions of fans in the '90s.
The Band
Dave Stephens – Lead Vocals
With a voice that can go from a powerful roar to a vulnerable whisper, Dave Stephens brings the unmistakable intensity of grunge frontmen like Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder to life. Dave’s stage presence and gritty vocals capture the angst, confusion, and raw emotion that are the hallmark of alternative rock. His performance is all about energy and authenticity, and he’s the kind of singer that demands you pay attention.
Rob Davidson – Bass Guitar
Holding down the low end is Rob Davidson, the heartbeat of Grunge Cantina. Rob brings the heavy, pulsating rhythms that drive the best alternative tracks. His bass playing is both aggressive and melodic, giving the songs depth and groove. Whether it's a thunderous drop-D riff or a subtle, moody line, Rob’s bass work anchors the band's sound with a distinct, unmistakable pulse that keeps everything together — just like the best grunge bassists before him.
Craig Dunford – Guitar
With a guitar in hand, Craig Dunford is the soul of Grunge Cantina’s sonic landscape. His riffs capture the rawness and power that are synonymous with the grunge movement. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Jerry Cantrell and Kurt Cobain, Craig creates guitar tones that range from searing, distorted noise to the haunting, melodic beauty of a clean passage. His solos are full of emotion, and his rhythm work pushes every song forward with unrelenting energy.
Chris Gallacher – Drums
And behind the kit is Chris Gallacher, the backbone of Grunge Cantina. Chris delivers the kind of powerful, driving rhythms that are essential to keeping a grunge song grounded in its aggressive, heavy sound. Drawing influence from drummers like Matt Cameron (Soundgarden) and Dave Grohl, Chris’s drumming is thunderous and complex, pulling the whole band into the musical vortex of raw energy and pure rock. Whether it’s a deep, pounding rhythm or a fast, chaotic breakdown, Chris always brings the thunder.
Why Grunge Cantina?
So why the name, you ask? “Grunge Cantina” is a nod to the idea of the music being a refuge, a place where you can escape from the noise and chaos of the world and find a moment of catharsis. Just like the cantina in Star Wars is a gathering place for those looking to forget their troubles, we believe grunge music does the same thing. It's the sound of rebellion, emotion, and connection. It’s a place where you can lose yourself and find yourself all at once.
We’re not here to be perfect. Grunge never was. It’s raw, it's loud, it’s sometimes messy, but it’s always real. That’s what we’re about, and that’s what you’ll experience at every Grunge Cantina show.
